How the Draft Lottery Simulator Works

This simulator uses the same NBA-style weighted lottery algorithm that powers our sealed draft lottery generator. Each team gets a number of “lottery balls” based on their standing — the worst record gets the most balls and the best odds at the #1 pick. Picks are drawn one at a time using cryptographic randomness, just like the real NBA draft lottery.

Unlike a real league lottery, the simulator runs instantly with no saved results. Use it to explore how NBA-style odds work, test different league sizes, or just watch the balls fall. When you're ready to run a real lottery for your fantasy league, create a sealed lottery with a scheduled reveal date that your whole league can watch together.

NBA-Style Lottery Odds Explained

In the real NBA draft lottery, the 14 non-playoff teams each receive a weighted number of lottery combinations. The three worst teams share the best odds (14% each), then odds drop steeply for better teams. Our algorithm interpolates these official NBA odds to any league size — whether your fantasy league has 6 teams or 20.

This means in a 12-team league, the bottom 3 teams all have roughly equal odds at the top pick, while the 12th-place team (best record in the lottery) has less than a 1% chance. The result: tanking is discouraged because even the worst team isn't guaranteed #1, but bad teams still get meaningfully better odds.
