Bring the NBA Draft Lottery to Your Fantasy League
The NBA Draft Lottery is one of the most exciting events in basketball. Now you can bring that same energy to your fantasy basketball league. Our simulator uses the same weighted odds system the NBA adopted in 2019 — the three worst teams share equal odds at the top, then probabilities drop sharply for better teams.
For a 14-team fantasy basketball league, the NBA-Style preset gives the bottom three teams each a 14% chance at the #1 pick. The 4th-worst team drops to 12.5%, the 5th to 10.5%, and so on. This prevents tanking while keeping the lottery exciting for every team in the bottom half of the standings.
See every team's probability at every draft position in a live odds matrix. After the reveal, get a full snake draft board showing picks across 13+ rounds — perfect for your category or points league.

How the Real NBA Draft Lottery Works — And How Ours Matches It
The real NBA Draft Lottery uses 14 ping-pong balls numbered 1–14, drawn in combinations of four. There are 1,001 possible combinations, and each non-playoff team is assigned a set of combinations based on their record. The three worst teams each receive 140 combinations (14.0% chance at #1), the fourth-worst gets 125 (12.5%), and probabilities taper down to the 14th team with just 5 combinations (0.5%).
Our NBA-Style preset replicates this exact distribution. For a 14-team league, the odds match the real NBA almost perfectly. For other league sizes, the algorithm interpolates — maintaining the flat-top-3 structure and steep taper that makes the NBA system work. The key principle: the worst teams share roughly equal odds at the top, preventing any single team from "winning the tank."
This system was adopted by the NBA in 2019 specifically to discourage tanking, and it works just as well for fantasy basketball. No team is guaranteed the #1 pick, but teams that struggled genuinely get a better chance at franchise-changing talent.
Choosing a Weighting Mode for Your Fantasy Basketball League
Category Leagues (9-Cat, 8-Cat)
In category leagues, draft position has a huge impact because elite players dominate multiple categories. NBA-Style weighting is ideal — it gives the worst teams the best chance at a generational talent like a first-round pick who fills the stat sheet across points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
Points Leagues
Points leagues flatten player value somewhat since everything converts to a single score. Draft position still matters, but the gap between the #1 and #6 pick is smaller than in category formats. Linear weighting provides a fair boost without the dramatic odds swing of NBA-Style.
Dynasty Basketball
Dynasty rookie drafts are where the lottery matters most. Landing the 1.01 pick in a loaded draft class can reshape a franchise for years. Use NBA-Style weighting seeded by your league's final standings — non-playoff teams in the lottery, playoff teams slotted by finish. This mirrors how the real NBA handles it and is the standard in competitive dynasty basketball leagues.
Fantasy Basketball Draft Lottery FAQ
How does NBA-style weighting work for fantasy basketball?
NBA-Style weighting mirrors the real NBA Draft Lottery system. The three worst teams share the best odds (flattened at the top), then odds taper steeply for better teams. Our algorithm interpolates the official NBA 14-team lottery percentages to fit any league size.
Can I simulate the actual NBA Draft Lottery odds?
Yes. Select "NBA-Style" weighting and set your league to 14 teams to get odds that closely match the real NBA Draft Lottery. The system uses the same flat-top-3 + steep-taper distribution the NBA adopted in 2019.
Does this work for dynasty basketball rookie drafts?
Absolutely. Dynasty basketball leagues use draft lotteries to determine rookie draft order. Seed the lottery with your league's current standings — worst teams get the most lottery balls.
What league sizes are supported?
Fantasy basketball leagues typically range from 8 to 14 teams. Our tool supports 2 to 30 teams with quick-select buttons for 8, 10, 12, and 14-team leagues.
When should I run the fantasy basketball draft lottery?
Most leagues run the lottery after the NBA Finals and schedule the reveal for draft night. For dynasty rookie drafts, run it as soon as the NBA season ends to keep offseason engagement high.
Can the commissioner see the results before the reveal?
No. The draft order is generated and sealed server-side at creation time. Nobody — including the commissioner — can view or change the results until the reveal date passes.
